LOOKING BACK AT THE YEAR

Franklin County artists and presenters outdid themselves in 2010. Although the quantity of concerts, events, exhibits, and productions staged this year was down slightly again, the quality was definitely up. This week, in the interest of avoiding a 12 page New Year’s newspaper spread, we will look at events around the county from the Artist In Residence cooperative to the West Swanton Methodist Church annual Lawn Supper. FESTIVAL OF TREES

Corliss Blakely of St. Albans has donated a Christmas tree with 33 original paintings to the Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees includes an Opening Gala plus a Christmas parade, Santa’s Workshop, the Sugar Plum Fairies, and hourly entertainment on Saturday and Sunday. Read more…

GIVING THANKS

At Thanksgiving time, I ask area artists to share what they are grateful for at this time of year. This was a hard year for our artists. The economy made a serious dent in the ability of many of our community to make a living.

One of the usual punchlines here in the Vermont artistic community is set up with the question, “how can you tell a successful Vermont artist?”

The answers usually include, “One with a day job.” Read more…

According to a radio ad I heard last month, there are now only 12 shopping days left until Christmas. I think that might be a slight exaggeration. The Artist In Residence Gallery features painters Ann Allen, Helen Kyle, Mary Reid, Cordell Smart, and Pamela Tobin, fiber artist Jan Brosky, and photographer Charlotte Rosshandler and offers a free meet-the-artists reception tonight.
